In a test of wills, a bull elephant meets my gaze and raises himself in a show of dominance. Yet he refrained from the next step--a rush towards me, lying prone in the sand. Other times this same bull had gone farther, giving me an angry head toss or blowing a trunk full of water or dust my way. Here he was measuring my resolve, and I gambled on judging his mood.
