"Every Picture Tells a Story"
A Conceptual Approach to Photographing Nature
4-DAY WORKSHOP IN SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA
This workshop is for photographers who have previously joined Frans for a workshop, and who want to learn to use photography as a visual language, combining images to create stories. The program includes indoor presentations, field trips to a variety of locations around the Monterey Bay, and image reviews.
Frans will introduce participants to different ways of interpreting the natural world with a camera. He will share his unique approach to photography, which applies creative innovations to the traditions of visual storytelling. Participants will learn how Frans conceptualizes images to express personal, editorial, and scientific ideas, and how those principles can be applied to landscape, wildlife, close-up, and environmental photography, both close to home and in the field. Frans will use his own work from three decades of assignments for National Geographic and many other clients, along with the work of other artists, to illustrate his ideas during presentations. Every participant will have the opportunity to create a picture story and have the images critiqued by Frans during both group sessions and individual reviews. Instruction will also cover advanced digital camera techniques and digital workflow.
(Experienced photographers who can demonstrate their skills on the basis of a resume or portfolio, are also eligible for this workshop).
Enrollment is limited to 15 participants
Workshop Fee: $2,250
Fall Dates: Wednesday September 29 though Sunday October 3, 2010

Quotes from "Inside a High-End Workshop" by Mark Edward Harris, Outdoor Photographer, November 2009:
“Lanting’s photographic workshops are conducted at his Santa Cruz,
California, studio, giving attendees the opportunity to tap into this award-winning photographer’s vast knowledge and talent, and put their newly acquired knowledge and techniques to the test in this beautiful coastal area.”
“The common thread of my 14 classmates--doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists and journalists--is a love of photography and nature, and a high bar for personal growth.”
--Mark Edward Harris, Outdoor Photographer, November 2009
“I like to teach people how to think visually, to take people away from a preoccupation with the hardware and software of photography and focus their minds and their hearts on what’s in front of them and connecting with that.
“Photography is a hybrid activity. It requires analytical and technical skills, but it also requires creativity, being able to think visually and metaphorically.
“People come out of our workshop feeling empowered, refreshed, stimulated and with a full bag of new techniques and creative shortcuts. It’s very rewarding to see people grow.”
--Frans Lanting to Mark Edward Harris, Outdoor Photographer, November 2009
