Introduction by Frans Lanting
While some photographs may say more than a thousand words, others gain when they are accompanied by text. Many of my favorite images fall into the latter category. Some of my most challenging photographs are illustrations of concepts. The photographs presented in this series can be appreciated as images in their own right. Many of them have been published that way. However, they have never been presented with the context within which they were conceived originally. In that sense they have been like unframed photographs, unfinished work.
Each of these stories reveals something beyond what is seen at first glance, something of the thinking brought to bear on the photographic process. In some cases it adds a twist, or a link with natural history that gives the image an extra dimension; it can be an enhancement or explanation of the way something is depicted; or it can be a personal story that recounts how a private experience grew into a concept that was nurtured for years until a specific photographic opportunity allowed the idea to be expressed as a photograph.
